What are Centralized PSPs?

Centralized PSPs (Payment Service Providers) are third-party platforms that route and settle payments through a single, controlling platform. The provider manages onboarding, risk rules, pricing, and payout schedules, holds custodial control over funds during processing, and can freeze or reverse transactions under its policies and regulatory obligations.

What are Decentralized PSPs?

Dentralized PSPs (Payment Service Providers) are systems that move and settle payments without a single, controlling intermediary. They run on distributed networks and/or merchant-controlled infrastructure, so rules, custody, and settlement are not dictated by a central platform. This enables censorship resistance, global reach, and programmable payment logic, while requiring the operator to manage security, backups, and monitoring. PayRam is an example of a decentralized PSP.

Comparison table

Dimension Centralized PSPs Decentralized PSPs
Control & Custody Provider controls rails and often funds during processing Merchant/network control; self- or user-custody of funds
Censorship/Deplatforming Subject to ToS changes, MCC bans, corridor restrictions Censorship-resistant; no single gatekeeper
Geographic Reach Limited by licenses and corridors Global by default (peer-to-peer)
Data Access Siloed dashboards/exports; provider controls retention First-party logs/events; merchant controls retention
Reliability Depends on provider uptime and policies Depends on your architecture; multi-region possible
Vendor Lock-In High; proprietary SDKs and workflows Low; flexible standards and portable setups
Privacy Extensive KYC/profiling within provider systems Pseudonymous wallet flows; merchant controls data handling
Ops Burden Lower (outsourced to provider) Higher: key management, backups, monitoring, access control
Fees & Pricing % fees + FX + surcharges; opaque/variable Infra + network fees; transparent, predictable
Extensibility Ecosystem-limited; roadmap set by provider Composable; integrate with any stack and services
